The EU is Switzerland's most important trading partner for agricultural products: 51 per cent of exports and 73 per cent of imports in the agricultural sector involve the EU, with a trade volume of over CHF 16 billion per year. The Agriculture Agreement (AgriA) of 1999 regulates tariff concessions, free trade in cheese, organic recognition and the protection of geographical indications (PDO/PGI).
Within the Bilateral III package, the existing agreement is institutionally anchored, with the sovereignty of Swiss agricultural policy being fully preserved: no dynamic adoption of law, no dismantling of border protection, no harmonisation of agricultural policy.
The Agriculture Agreement will henceforth consist of two parts:
The existing agricultural component regulates:
Central: the agricultural component is subject to NO dynamic adoption of law and NO harmonisation of agricultural policy.
The new food safety component is integrated into the existing agreement by protocol. It regulates the mutual recognition of food safety standards and facilitates trade in processed foodstuffs.
Switzerland has secured comprehensive sovereignty guarantees in the negotiations (11 formal rounds, materially concluded on 20 December 2024):
