Protection from Entanglement in Conflicts

Summary: The initiative prohibits accession to military alliances and thus the invocation of an alliance case. Switzerland could not be drawn into wars. 85% of the population believe that Switzerland should not participate in military conflicts.

1. No Alliance Case

Art. 54a para. 2 prohibits military alliances (except in the case of direct attack) [1]. NATO Article 5 (collective defence obligation) would not apply -- no automatic participation in war.

2. Historical Argument

Neutrality preserved Switzerland from both World Wars. No participation in a foreign war since 1815.

Critical contextualisation: Historians emphasise that it was not neutrality alone that protected Switzerland but also strategic calculations of the warring parties and geographical circumstances (see Disadvantages: History) [2].

3. Survey Data

  • 85% believe Switzerland should not participate in military conflicts (Chancenbarometer 2026) [3]
  • 80% want to fundamentally maintain neutrality [3]

4. Counter-argument

Critics argue that Switzerland de facto benefits from the NATO protective umbrella without its own contribution. Roger de Weck spoke of "Swiss parasitism" (see Disadvantages: Security) [4].
